Black Political Task Force – We Raise Our Voices

Black Political Task Force “Project 1,000” flyer (ca. 1980) and “Community Slate” letter (1979)

Believing that grass-roots activism was only a start, though a powerful one, groups like the Black Political Task Force also worked to register African American voters and support African American political candidates on the state and local level who could begin to effect change at home. Their “Project 1,000” effort aimed to register at least 1000 new African American voters for the 1980 election. From the Roxbury Multi-Service Center records.

Dear The Black Political Task Force vras formed because of the need for a fundamental increase in political power for people of color. The development of this organization has been ta~~ng place over the past thirteen months by a nucleus of interested community folks r,vho have committed themselves to this concept. These individuals have contacts vdth various Black Associations in Boston and ~~ssachusetts, (i.e., fraternities, sororities, professional associations and organizations, etc.). The collective results of sucp contacts enables the or~~zation to be capable of influencing a significant number of votes in order to support only those candidates seeking office i?ho have demonstrated a cowmitment to serve in the best interest of the Black and Hispanic Community. In order to evaluate the candidates seeking endorsement by the Task Force, a screening committee was established. They developed a criteria i·rbich included an interest survey, completed questionnaire, and intervievr for each candidate who accepted procedural guidelines. After strict adherence to the screening process and very careful consideration, the screening coa~ttee recommended their endorsements to the general membership ivho in turn voted to accept these recommendations at a meeting of the body held July 14, 1979. \..Je would like to announce our slate and ask all people of color to ~·rork and vote to assure that only our slate of endorsed c~~didates are elected in the September Primary.
