“Elect John D. O’Bryant” flyer (1977)

Growing political representation created further platforms for African American voices. After initial battles were won and lost, strong voices from within the community worked to keep visibility and passions high; John D. O’Bryant, the first African American on the Boston School Committee, was one of those voices. He later became president of the committee and served as a leading voice in the African American community throughout his life, particularly during his long tenure as Vice President of Student Affairs at Northeastern University. From the Citywide Educational Coalition records.
