La Alianza addresses its services to low-income Latinos who face different problems, such as discrimination, education, lack of opportunity, etc. This multi-service agency has four main departments: Mental Health, Protective Services, Adult Education, and Youth Services. Meet the 1990 Challenge: Build a Safer end Healthier Coaaunity for Ourselves For futher information contact : La Alianza Hispana 407-409 Dudley Street Roxbury, MA 02119 (617) 427-7175 La Alianza's Adult Education Department has operated Adult Basic Education and English as a Second Language programs for adults 18 years or older for 15 consecutive years. These biliteracy programs target both the needs of Latinos with limited English proficiency and those who also lack basic native language and computational skills. Funding is provided by the Adult Literacy Initiative and the Department of Public Welfare through EDIC-JCS, and by the Massachusetts Department of Ed ucat ion. The morning biliteracy classes are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday to Friday. All adult learners take 2 hours of Native Language Literacy and 2 hours of ESL daily, from Monday to Thursday. Fridays are reserved for education related activities, such as work site visits and job skills workshops. To qualify one must be registered with an Employment and Training office. The applicant must also test at or below the 6th grade level in Spanish and be in need of ESL classes. The evening biliteracy program includes two levels of ESL and 3 levels of ABE/GED classes in Spanish. All biliteracy students take four hours of ESL and four hours of ABE/GED in Spanish per week. The class schedule is from 5-9 p.m., either on Monday and Wednesday or on Tuesday and Thursday, depending on one's ABE/GED level. Adult learners who need only ESL are offered 8 hours per week. Those who need only ABE/GED classes are offered 4 hours per week. A counselor is available for all students to discuss their educational/vocational plans or any personal problems that might arise. Referrals can also by made to other departments at La Alianza Hispana or to other agencies. �
