Centro Cultural Jorge Hernández newspaper clipping (ca. 1993)
In March 1986, after years of fundraising and renovation, IBA opened a multi-purpose cultural center in Villa Victoria. Named the Jorge Hernández Cultural Center (JHCC), after IBA’s director from 1979 to 1986, Jorge Hernández, the center was housed in the former All Saints Lutheran Church and was the first of its kind in Boston and New England. The JHCC is the site for many cultural activities, including fiestas, dances, conferences, concerts, movies, and dinners. This article emphasizes the importance of art in the Villa Victoria community, specifically highlighting the JHCC as an innovative venue for Latino arts programming. From the Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción records.

IBA community center will open next month by Steve Gelsi After weathering a series of setbacks and funding proJllems, the lnquilinos Boricuas En AcciOn community center on West Newton Street is nearing completion and should be ready for service by next month. IBA expects to finish converting the former Church of All Saints and to open the center to the public at an inauguration ceremony on March 21. but it's incredibly rewarding to see the project come to fruition." So far, IBA has raised over $1 .1 million for the project. The organization however, needs at least another quarter million, Hernandez said, to finish phase two and three of the project •• a basement daycare center and a youth center in the adjoining parish house. Hernandez said he doesn't know how long it will take to raise the rest of the money IBA needs to finish the last two phases. Boston Foundation, Hyams Trust, USC (the Local Initiative Support Corporation), Acostic Lindsey Trust, the Haitian Foundation, the Bailey Foundation, and Warren Trust, as well as the Ci:y of Boston and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts The building's cornerstone, date 1898, reportedly contains a time capsule ~ut Conover says he has no plans to open II. "We have to deal with the economic reality of the situation," he said. Christopher Blair, a classical music conductor who lives near the new center, said that the South End could use another facility for musical and other functions, and added that he knows of a few local artists who would like to rent the space for performances. Jorge Hernandez, director of IBA. (Photo by Rose Marston) When completed, the community center will pr vide the South End with its only medium-sized flexible function space able to accommodate 11p to 400 people for parties, performances, fundraising events, meetings, or whatever else is appropriate, says Jorge Hernandez, IBA executive director since 1977. "It feels wonderful," Hernandez said. "After all this time, the work has paid off." Construction on the building, which boasts a yellow brick exterior and the third largest spire in Boston, had originally been slated for completion by the end of 1984. IBA, however, ran out of funding for the project soon after it became apparent that federal tax loopholes, which made grants worthwhile for generous patrons, would be eliminated by changing tax laws. IBA, however, was able to finish construction of the community center performance space with a $175,000 loan from the Boston Community Development Finance Corporation. "It looked like there was no light at the end of the tunnel," Hernandez said of the project. "We've had our share of problems, "A lot of area artists -- homeless theatre and dance groups, the South End Chorale Society, and others -- will be interested, • he said, "The facility will definitely be used, especially if the price isn't too high." The performance space consists of a large ballroom floor able to accommodate 220 people sitting down at tables or 400 people sitting down in chairs. The room will also contain a stage, lights, and a sound system. A swerving U-shaped balcony with 180 fixed seats overlooks the main room. Richard Thai, IBA's community director, said his organization is loooking for an experienced Facility Manager, to help oversee the community center's programs. Hernandez said that any group that makes arrangements to use the facility before May 31 will be eligible for a discount on space rental charges. David Conover, who has worked on the community center since 1980 said that "a lot of people have come over looking for work. We've tried to put as many of them to work as we can afford to. Major backers of the project include the Riley Foundation, Bank of Boston, the Members of construction crew discuss plans for the center performance space, which will include a stage, system, and seating for over 500, including chairs balcony.
