Marriage Does Not Equal Liberation stickers (ca. 1996)

Standing for more radical action than assimilating to heterosexual patterns of marriage, the Women’s Action Coalition argued that achieving marriage and domestic partnership were not solutions for liberating lesbians or eliminating homophobia. From the WAC’s feminist perspective, marriage historically has been a tool for female oppression, and members objected to perpetuating notions of women as property and to the state governing monogamous relationships. From the Women’s Action Coalition records.
