I Wanna Get Married lyrics and clipping (1992)

“Although I am queer I like the idear of my perfect lover signing / A covenant with the government to love me until he dies.”
In August 1991, gay and lesbian activists staged a group wedding outside of the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston’s South End. Two dozen gay men and lesbians exchanged vows in a theatrical ceremony designed as a political statement against the Catholic Church and Cardinal Bernard Law. Abe Rybeck, the artistic director of the Theater Offensive, made an appearance in wedding drag. Later, Rybeck lampooned the desire for same-sex couples to share in the same marriage rights as heterosexuals in his mockery of a dysfunctional relationship between two men. From the Theater Offensive records.
