' ./ '> New course shows women's viewpoint By PEGGY CONNOLL Y A women's perspectiva held by sorne 51 percent of the population - will finally be recognized in the Northeastern currículum when an interdisciplinary course entitled Women's Stud ies is offered next quarter. The sequence 1O course, caardinated by Debra Kaufman , assistant professor of sociology, will include prafessors from ather areas such as nursing, history, madern languages and ecanomics. The professors will discuss specific tapies from a women's perspectiva. Kaufman will then conduct the discussion perlad during 'the third class meeting of the week . As a multi-discipline caurse, it will "just touch an" the var-. iaus perspectivas, said Kaufman. ldeally, she said, the students will seek other caurses offered wh ich deal with ane of the specific perspectivas, such as wamen in history. "lt might serve as an intra to the issues," she added. The course was designad to "sensitize" the students to the viewpoint of women, said Kaufman. For centurias men have dominated the academic and literary fields which resultad in a very male influenced mode of thought. Kaufman shuns the term feminist because of the many negativa connotations involved, particulari'' concerning the radical women · ~ groups. "1 hope men take the caurse," said Kaufman. "lt will be a fem- inist perspectiva, but will not be radical." The women's study course will be repeated during the fall quarter. lf successful, more courses may be available and a minar in women's studies made possible, said Kaufman. Northeastern has lagged far behind other eastern universities in the area of women's studies, said Kaufman, wño founded such pragrams at Cornell University and the New Yarft State University at Albany. Kaufman said she has also been receiving suppart from a consortium of interested professors in the 30-brack Fenway area. Kaufrrian is enthusiastic about the inter-disciplinary na- / ture of the course. The varied input from professors "volunteering" their time and expertise should make the course more interesting, Kaufman said. "These courses (interdlsciplinary) tend to benefit the faculty as well as the students," she said, as she talked about the interest from faculty. "l've never seen an interdisciplinary ·course fail. What lt might lack in one thing it makes up in generating new ideas and dialogue." During the 10-week spring quarter, tapies will include growing up female, the soclalization. process, women in literatura and art, women as health care providers and consumers, women and politics, and socio-economic contributions of women.
