FACT SHEET: FREEDOM STAYOUT DAY IN THE BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS THE PRO BLJt~M What is the purpose of the Freedom Stayout? To protest against de facto segregation and express the pain that it inflicts. Does de facto segregation exist in the Boston Public Schools? Yes. The great majority of Boston's white and colored students are educated in separate schools - especially in the elementary grades. Isn't this caused bX segregated housing? In part, yes. But whatever the cause, it makes f~ bad education of both Negro and Caucasian. How does segregation produce::, bad education? The U.S. Supreme Court says that segregated education of Negro children "generates a feeling of inferiority as to their status in the conw.·uni ty that may affect their hearts all minds in a way unlike~ly ever to be undone •" And it also generates an anti-democratic feeling of superiority in the white child. Aren't the School Cormnittee and new Superintendent atte mpting to correct the evil effects of segregated education? No. The majority of the School Committee which sets the policy, refuses to admit that segregation affects education. It has made no plans to change the situation. What can be done in Boston? A simple change in the school district lines would help insure integration. It would relieve congestion in some schools and utilize unused classroom space in other schoo ls. Bussing is not necessary. THE PROTEST What students will take part in the Freedom Stayout? All Negro and white students in Boston and the suburbs (and in other cities across the country) whose parents give them permission. Is the Freedom Stayout just a holiday? No. All Stayout students will be assigned to Freedom Schools for the day and will get attendance slips and diploma. Don't the children need more education instead of less. Shouldn't they st~ in school?. Responsible protest is educational. And the Freedom Schools will teach subjects the public schoo ls do not teach. Isn't the Freedom Stayout illegal because i t encourages truancy? The best ·legal opinion is that the truancy laws ~pply to habitual truancy, not to the conscientious decision of parents who want to protest segregated education. However, those involved in leading the Stayout are willing to accept the consequences if the courts judge their action to be in violation of the law. The leaders will be well identified. Doesn't the Freedom Stayout teach children disrespect for law? No. A conscientious decision to protest against evil in a non-violent way never encourages disrespect for law; it teaches respect for laws M1ich bring freedom to everybody. Isn't there another way to eliminate segregated education? Most northern cities with problems like Boston's have at least admitted that the problem exists. But. The Boston School Committee hasn 1 t t, in spite of endless talk, research, negotiations, resolutions, picketing, etc. The Freedom Stayout is just another way of emphasizing the extreme importance of the issue. Is the Stayout "using the children"? No, because it is their education that is at stake.
