The Spanish-speaking population of Boston has grown from around 1,000 in 1959 to between 40-65,000 today. Confusion, a sense of frustration, conflicting value system, inability to communicate, racial or ethnic descrimination, and societal rejection are some of the more obvious environmental conditions which daily confront many Spanish. speaking residents in Boston. State agencies, hospitals, public assistance offices, schools and other social service providers in Boston do not, on the whole have adequate programs or sufficient Spanish-speaking staff to facilitate the delivery of services to the Spanish community. / In any plan that would establish programs to assist the Spanishspeaking community in its expected development, education must be included as a major instrument. The problems of this group ~n the areas of employment, housing and health could be alleviated with the expansion and development of the adult education programs. Education is a major service component of Alianza Hispana. During the past fiscal year, the agency's education department continued the expansion and development of the following adult education programs: A. Mothers tutoring Mothers: this program employs community women who will give basic literacy instruction in Spanish in the homes of other women, as they progress, students will be led into English as a second language. B. ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE: This program was designed to offer the Spanish-speaking adult a practical knowledge of the English language. Emphasis is placed in the areas of Conversation, Pronunciation, and Reading. The program is divided in three levels according to the student's proficiency and needs: Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced. Curriculum materials are provided by the agency. Classes take plaec f i ve days a week, one hour for each l evel, for a period o f six months. At present, one instructor is in charge of the three groups. Experience has proved the need of increasing the number of instructors to one per level. This will make the tri-level desing more workable and will permit a greater number participants, particularly for those enrolled under the General Education Diploma (GED) training. GENERAL EDUCATION DIPLOMA TRAINING: More than 97% of the students trained and referred by our agency' s GED program have sucessfully passed the GED examination. The major objective of the program is to prepare the students to obtain their high school diploma, consequently better jobs and further education. It emphasizes the review of the subjects necessary for the GED examination: Science, Mathematics, and Spanish, a tri-level aesign with the same categories used in the ESL training program is recommended in the future implementation of this program. This will give the GED trainees an opportunity to participate in the ESL trainning and vice versa. The Spanish as a second language (SSL) program: This program is designed for individuals who are working with the Spanish-speaking community and who need to be trained in the basics of the Spanish language in order to provide information and services. The classes have two levels; beginning and advanced Spanish. They are conducted two days a week, for a total of four hours. SPANISH LITERACY This program provides instruction in spoken and written Spanish persons who lack basic language skills. Cur~'[) riculum for this program comes from the agency' s Literacy Tutorial Pro, - gram, Mothers Tutoring Mothers ( MTM) ,~~ to Spanish-speaking f""{' The classes take place three days a week four an hour each day. instructor is in charge of this group. One The division of participants in two major groups is necessary. Division should be: Level 1- basic skills for grades 1-3 and Level 2, basic skills for grades 3- 6 . Such a division would allow participants to enroll 2n the GED-ESL programs after completion of the training, if desired. DRIVERS PERMIT EXAMINATION TRAINING This program teaches students the theory and terminology needed to obtain a driver's permit ltcense. Classes consist of two days a week. LECTURE PROGRAM In this, the youngest at Alianza, activities vary from guest speakers, to movies and presentations of curriculum materials available at the agency's library.
