BUDDIES 426-3772 HOTLINE Vol. 1 No.7 DECEMBER 1989 51 Stuart Street GAY AND LESBIAN RIGHTS LAW After 15 years of hard work, Massachusetts has become the second state in the nation to guarantee lesbians and gay men rights equal to our fellow citizens. Governor Michael Dukakis signed the bill into law on November 15th. The bill ''makes it illegal to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation in employment, housing, and public accommodations". Steve Tierney, co-chair of the Massachusetts Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus, spoke at the bill signing ceremony. He stated, ''This is a time of celebration for every member of the gay and lesbian community. There is joy, thanksgiving, and praise for everyone to share". When contacted, Tierney praised the men of Buddies (both old and new). "Budddies was always there for us. We collected letters to the senators and representatives, recruited volunteers, and gathered vital financial support. Buddies has every reason to celebrate its part in this victory''. The community celebration has begun. An overflow crowd gathered on Saturday to sign a huge copy of the bill and hear Tierney, co-chair Arline Isaacson, and Elaine Noble praise the community for its great victory. That evening more than 2,000 people poured into the Boston Opera House to dance and party. ''This was the perfect cap to the signing of the bill,'' said Isaacson. ''The whole community was there; men and women, young and old, and people of all colors. We showed the world what equal rights means to our community'' . The passage of this law is an important bit of history for our community. However, it is just the beginning. Already some forces are attempting to repeal this law. Tierney is confident that the community is strongly united. "Wonderful events, like the Buddies Thanksgiving dinner for the elderly, have put our community into the best public light. The event makes us proud but also makes a great political statement and wins us friends and supporters. This kind of community work will ensure that a repeal effort is defeated." Those interrested in working on gay and lesbian political issues are encouraged to contact the Massachusetts Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus at 262-1565. Page2 DECEMBER 1989 DECEMBER 1989 PageS A YEAR IN REVIEW Considering we have only been back a year, we haven't just been sitting on our butts.
