\ Gay Pride Week is a time of intensive celebration, as well as an examination of the realities and n e eds of our individual and collective gay lives. The o r i g in of the event is the Stonewa l l riot of Jun e , 1969, whe n g ay people at the Stonewall Inn on Christopher St., Ne w York City, resisted police harassment during a routine raid One amaz e d polic e man e xpressed on the gay-patroniz e d bar. his shock by saying, "This time the sissies fought back." The bar (now closed) marks the birth of gay liberation. Gay Pride Week should r e flect th e spirit of Stonewallto publicly c e l e brat e gay sexuality and reclaim the right to self-expre ssion of our bodi e s. We want to cr e at e the c e lebration with love and joyous militancy - with all of the g ay community. Ye t we cannot join the bic e ntennial f e stiviti e s. Those 200 years of Amerikan history have been oppre ssive to gays, Behavior from the Plymouth colony witch-burning forward. modification programs, FBI hunts, bar burnings and personal attacks are part of the present reality of our gay opprese sion. M anwhil e , e ven the most conservativ e demands of civil rights have not been met, let alon e th e more radical demands of gay liherationists. We cannot acc e pt non-commitment. Getting on the bandwagon of straig ht culture and marching to its sour tune undermines our struggl e . Beyond the respons e , "Oh yes, I'm gay" when confront e d .... beyond the bars and the baths (whether one is "out" or not) must be the perinvolvme nt in activities that promote g ay sonal lib e ration. To th e straight corununity we, th e Fort Hill Faggots for Freedom and frienas a re presenting a posture of mili.tant solidarity. To the gay community, we ar e making a show of support and r e acting to differences in a spir i t of loving confrontation. 0 �
