Fifteen Years of Pride flyer (1984)
“…we are impressive in number, rich in our diversity, and proud of who and what we are.”
For Boston’s 15th Pride Parade in 1984, the Boston Lesbian and Gay Pride Committee distributed this flyer to increase representation of “allies” at the march. While noting how the Boston gay and lesbian community had flourished since the Stonewall Riots, the Committee emphasized that the struggles to gain basic civil rights and to end homophobia were far from over. Did you know that every year in Boston and in many other cities around the country millions of lesbian/gay people take part in celebrations known as "Lesbian and Gay Pride Day"? We have this celebration in June to carmarorate the anniversary of the first I=Ublic rebellion against hcm:>sexual oppression. This event, ~n as the Stonewall Riots, took place in 1969 and was the springboard which led to the rrodern lesbian/gay liberation rrovenent. A lot has changed since that time. many ways. OUr carmunity has grown and flourished in Legislation has begun to address our needs and rights. Openly gay/les- bian people have run for office and received suptX>rt of their constituencies·. And yet, inspite of these gains, gay oppression and hcm:>phobia are still ramPant in oilr society. Many of us can not be visible as lesbians/gay men where we work and live. We fear for our job, hanes, personal relationships, families and physical safety. It is of great importance to us that each year there is a day in June when we can cane out onto the streets of Boston with our loved ones and friends- visibly gay and lesbian - 20,000 + strong. This day is a statenent to the world and ourselves that we are impressive in number, rich in our diversity, and proud ·of who and what we are.
