Identity & Community

“Coming out,” a major event in the lives of lesbians and gays, can mean coming to terms with one’s own sexual identity as well as disclosing that identity to others. Many gay and lesbian groups have formed in Boston that offer understanding, assistance, and support for the process of discovering and describing oneself. Moreover, such groups provide networks of social contacts that build solidarity and community. The organizations are diverse in focus and purpose; some form around specific issues or institutions, others are purely social or political, but together they strive to meet the needs of individuals seeking the benefits of communal action and support.
