Boston native Elma Lewis (1921-2004) discusses what led her to create the Elma Lewis School of Fine Arts. For the first time in Boston, the School offered African Americans professional-level instruction in art, dance and theatre. Locally known as “the doyenne of black culture,” Ms. Lewis connects historical awareness and cultural expression with racial pride and empowerment in this video.
